PRAYER: O God, You reveal Your mighty power chiefly in showing mercy and kindness. Grant us the full measure of Your grace that we may obtain Your promises and become partakers of Your heavenly glory. Amen.

HYMNS: 283, 765 (s), 442, 402/314, 615 (v. 1&3)

ORDER OF SERVICE: Common Service with Communion (p.15ff)

SERVICE THEME: God’s presence among us is not made sure by outward measures—the abundance of our possessions or the health of our bodies. It is made sure by the peace we have in our hearts through faith in Jesus.

FIRST LESSON: Exodus 16:2-20

It is not the request for food of itself that is wrong. Rather, it is the attitude of the soul, here an attitude of unbelief. The need for daily bread should provoke the soul to humble and trusting supplication.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 145 on page 119

From His gracious hand alone, we are fed. May our souls respond with hymns of thanks and praise.

SECOND LESSON: I Corinthians 10:1-5, 11-13

GOSPEL: John 6:24-35

In a magnificent paradox, Jesus teaches us the proper relationship between body and soul, and the relationship of both to God. The primary goal of life is not the satisfaction of the need for perishing bread. Our goal should be to gain the bread that does not perish. And that bread, given in the Word of God, creates and sustains faith.

SERMON TEXT: Exodus 16:2-10
