HYMNS: 191, 343, 428, 443 vs 1-2

ORDER OF SERVICE: Service of the Word p 38ff

FIRST LESSON: Exodus 14:10-31

Things looked really tough for the people of Israel. The sea was in front of them and an Egyptians army was behind them. They thought they were goners. But the LORD told them just to be still and watch. He would do everything. He allowed them to walk through the Sea of Reeds on dry land and used that same sea to drown the pursuing army.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 73 on page 94

We may lean totally on the Lord for security and happiness forever.

SECOND LESSON: James 1:2-12

We often face trials of many kinds. The Lord promises to be with us every step of the way. God wants us to keep praying about the trials.

GOSPEL: Matthew 14:22-33

The sight of Jesus walking across the water towards their boat terrifies the disciples. Jesus’ words dispel their fears. The arm of the almighty is never too short when little faith trembles.

THE SERMON: James 1:2-12

THEME: Joy in Suffering
