HYMNS: 566, 572, 576, 571 vs 1& 3

ORDER OF SERVICE: Service of the Word p 38ff

FIRST LESSON: Ezekiel 33:7-11

God gives Ezekiel and all of His children the solemn charge of watching over each other’s souls. We must preach the law to those who are disobedient and the gospel to those who are despairing.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 110 (s) on page 54

Jesus is both humble and powerful. Here it points to His power which He will use to crush His enemies on our behalf.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 13:1-10

Because of God’s unconditional love for us, we who believe in Christ have a joyful debt of love to our neighbor. This includes our government authorities. We owe them taxes, revenues, honor and respect because they are established by God and serve as God’s agent by punishing evildoers and protecting law-abiding citizens.

GOSPEL: Matthew 18:15-20

Since Jesus, the Good Shepherd, spared no pain to find the lost sheep, so Christ’s Church will diligently use God’s law and gospel to call the Erring brother to repentance.

THE SERMON: Matthew 9:35-10:4
