WELCOME, VISITORS: We are glad you could be with us and we welcome you back any time. Please sign our guest register in the narthex/entry.

PRAYER: Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the way for Your only Son. By His coming give us strength in our conflicts and shed light on our path through the darkness of this world. Amen.

HYMNS: 23, 11, 16, 6

ORDER OF SERVICE: Service of the Word p 38ff

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 40:1-11

God wants His people comforted. He calls Isaiah to cry out with the message: “All men are like grass . . . but the Word of our God stands forever. The message exposes human weakness and comforts broken sinners with God’s strength.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 85 on page 97

This is an appropriate psalm for Advent: “Show us Your unfailing love, O Lord, and grant us Your salvation.”

SECOND LESSON: 2 Peter 3:8-14

Peter describes the Lord’s patience, His desire for man’s repentance, and His sudden return. We do not fear His return. We shape our lives to fit into the pattern of that promise.

GOSPEL: Mark 1:1-8

John’s rough garments and rough lifestyle were in line with his rough message. He was the second Elijah, sent to fill the ditches of despair and level the mountains of pride to make a smooth highway for the King to enter human hearts.

THE SERMON: Psalm 85
