PRAYER: Lord God, You, You know that we are surrounded by many dangers and that we often stumble and fall. Strengthen us in body and mind, and brings us safely through all temptations. Amen.

HYMNS: 462, 395, 92, 562

ORDER OF SERVICE: Service of the Word p 38ff

FIRST LESSON: Deuteronomy 18:15-20

Moses gives the promise of another Prophet who will be like Moses, yet greater.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 1 on page 64

This psalm provides an appropriate introduction to the entire Psalter. There is a stark contrast between “the way of the righteous” and “the way of the wicked.”

SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Our Lord wants us to be careful in our Christian freedom so that we do not offend the weak. The use of meat sacrificed to idols is something neither commanded nor forbidden by God. In matters of concern today, we remember not to wound weak consciences merely to show that something is permissible.

GOSPEL: Mark 1:21-28

This lesson shows us the Prophet spoken of by Moses in today’s Old Testament reading. Jesus teaches with divine authority and then demonstrates it by driving out evil spirits. Jesus reveals His glory.

THE SERMON: Mark 1:21-28

THEME: Jesus Has Real Authority
