HYMNS: 712 (s), 97, 280, 95 vs 3&5

ORDER OF SERVICE: Service of the Word p 38ff

FIRST LESSON: 2 Kings 2:1-12a

Elijah goes to heaven in a whirlwind. Elijah’s transition was glorious, as is the passing of every child of God—accompanied by fiery chariots or not—who leaves the Church Militant for the Church Triumphant.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 148 on page 121

God has raised up His Anointed One to bring salvation. As a result, everything in all creation is to praise the Lord.

SECOND LESSON: 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2 The law came through Moses in a glorious way, but those who try to use the law as a way to get to heaven by works have missed the point. More glorious than the law is the gospel, which proclaims the way of salvation as free grace, given through the redeeming work of Jesus.

GOSPEL: Mark 9:2-9

The appearance of Moses and Elijah with Christ gave Peter, James and John a foretaste of heaven. They wanted to keep this taste of heaven on earth.

THE SERMON: 2 Kings 2:1-12a
