WELCOME, VISITORS: We are glad you could be with us and we welcome you back any time. Please sign our guest register in the narthex/entry.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, on this day You ascended far above the heavens and at God’s right hand you rule the nations. Leave us not alone, we pray, but grant us the Spirit of truth that at Your command and by Your power we may be Your witnesses in all the world. Amen.

HYMNS: Hymn fest, see bulletin insert

ORDER OF SERVICE: see insert

FIRST LESSON: Acts 1:1-11

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to the apostles and commissions them as His messengers. We see Jesus go to heaven visibly, and hear the comforting message of the angels that He will come again in the same way.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 47 on page 47 (s)

“God has ascended amid shouts of joy,” and He rules from “His holy throne.”

SECOND LESSON: Ephesians 1:16-23

Paul thanks God for them, and He prays that they would better know their hope and God’s power. Christ’s ascension shows God’s power and the kingship of Christ over all things, especially the Church.

GOSPEL: Luke 24:44-53

The end of Luke’s Gospel shows us Jesus interpreting the past (“He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures”), predicting the future (“repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached”) and ascending (“taken up into heaven”).
