Our Pastor

Pastor Stephen Smith grew up in Oakfield, a small town in east central Wisconsin near Fond du Lac or about 55 miles north of Milwaukee.  His dad was a dairy plant fieldman and his mother, a bookkeeper at the local grain elevator.

In preparation for the ministry, Pastor Smith attended Northwestern College in Watertown, WI and went on to attend Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI. Graduating from the Seminary in 1978 with a Masters in Theology, the Call Committee at the seminary assigned him to serve Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Buffalo, MN.

Pastor Smith married Amy Petersen in 1985.  God blessed them with two children.  Adam is now a museum curator at the Carver County Museum in Waconia, MN and Crystal is a deputy sheriff in Otter Tail County, MN. Crystal and her husband Ryan have a son, Thaddeus, and a daughter, Aria, making Pastor Smith a grandfather. The Lord decided to take Amy to Himself in December 2009. God has blessed him with another partner. Pastor and Barb Billing were married at Immanuel in 2014. Barb, who also lost her first husband, has two sons, Keith and Brian.

There are many things that Pastor Smith enjoys about being in the ministry. It brings him great excitement when he knows that someone gets it, that Jesus did it all for us and as a result heaven is open to us.

When not involved in his work at Immanuel, Pastor Smith likes to garden, read mysteries, study up on the Civil War and World War II and, as you can imagine, spend time with his grandchildren.

Feel free to contact Pastor Smith at any time. He can be reached at 763.682.1878.
