Prayer Before Worship

O Lord—our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter—we are assembled in your presence to hear your holy Word. We pray that you would open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD

Beginning on Page 38 in the Hymnal.

HYMN (#473) “Savior, I Follow On”

M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.

In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

C: (Sung) Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.

Your faithfulness continues forever.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray. O Lord our God, so govern the nations on earth and direct the affairs of this world that your church may worship you in peace and joy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:     (Sung) Amen.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON Job 38:1-11

38 Then the Lord responded to Job out of a violent storm. He said: Who is this who spreads darkness over my plans with his ignorant words? Get ready for action like a man! Then I will ask you questions, and you will inform me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you understand anything about it.
Who determined its dimensions? I am sure you know. Who stretched out the surveying line over it? What supports its foundation? Who set its cornerstone in place, 7when the morning stars sang loud songs together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Who locked up the sea behind doors when it burst out of the womb? When I clothed the sea with clouds, when I wrapped it with thick darkness as its swaddling cloths, 10 when I broke its power with my decree, when I locked it up behind barred, double doors, 11 I said, “You may come this far, but no farther. Here is the barrier for your proud waves.”     (EHV)

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM OF THE DAY (Sung) Psalm 46 (page 84)

SECOND LESSON Acts 27:13-26

13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they could carry out their plan. They raised the anchor and sailed close to the shore of Crete. 14 But before long, a hurricane-like wind, called the “northeaster,” rushed down from the island. 15 Since the ship was caught in it and could not head into the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along. 16 As we sailed on the sheltered side of a small island called Cauda, we were barely able to secure the skiff.[a] 17 After hoisting it on board, the men tied ropes around the ship to reinforce it. Then, fearing that they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and in this way were driven along. 18 Because we were tossed around so violently by the storm, the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard. 19 On the third day, they threw the ship’s gear overboard with their own hands. 20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the violent storm kept pressing down on us, finally all hope that we would be saved was disappearing. 21 After they had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have followed my advice and not set sail from Crete and avoided this damage and loss. 22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because there will be no loss of life among you. Only the ship will be lost. 23 In fact, last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me 24 and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. And surely God has graciously given you all those who are sailing with you.’ 25 So keep up your courage, men, because I believe God that it will be exactly the way I have been told. 26 However, we must run aground on some island.”        (EHV)

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

VERSE OF THE DAY

M: Alleluia. They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” Alleluia.  (Mark 4:41)

C: (Sung) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

These words are written that we may believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL Mark 4:35-41

35 On that day, when evening came, Jesus said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.” 36 After leaving the crowd behind, the disciples took him along in the boat, just as he was. Other small boats also followed him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves were splashing into the boat, so that the boat was quickly filling up. 38 Jesus himself was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to drown?” 39 Then he got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still lack faith?” 41 They were filled with awe and said to one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”      (EHV)

M: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: (Sung) Praise be to you, O Christ!

HYMN OF THE DAY (#430+) “Evening and Morning”

1 Evening and morning, sunset and dawning,

wealth, peace and gladness, comfort in sadness:
these are your works; and bring glory to you.
Times without number, we wake or we slumber,
your eye observes us, from danger preserves us,
shining upon us a love that is true.

2 Father, Oh, hear me, pardon and spare me;
Calm all my terrors, blot out my errors
that by your eyes they may no more be scanned.
Order my goings, direct all my doings;
As best it may be, retain or release me;
All I commit to your fatherly hand.

3 Ills that still grieve me soon are to leave me;

though billows tower, and winds gain power,

after the storm the fair sun shows its face.

Joys e’er increasing and peace never ceasing:

These shall I treasure and share in full measure

when in his mansions God grants me a place.

4 With joyful singing let us be bringing

to God in heaven all we’ve been given,

offered as gifts our Creator will prize.

Our best possessions are thankful expressions:

Hymns that adore him, our worship before him—

all to his throne like sweet incense arise.

SERMON TEXT Mark 4:35-41

SERMON THEME “Peace, Be Still—

God is with us through the Storms of Life”

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

THANKSGIVING

OFFERING – Please leave offering in the plate as you depart.

HYMN (415) “Be Still, My Soul”

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

In thanksgiving for His steadfast love and wondrous works to the children of men, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For deliverance from every trouble and distress of wind and wave, sin and death, and to bring us at last to our eternal haven, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the endurance of the Gospel with its blessings amid every hardship, struggle and suffering; and for the steady conviction that since we have Christ, we possess everything, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For Christian neighbors in our community and in each home, that as the beloved of God, we may be unashamed to serve each other in genuine love, truthful speech and constant patience, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For our civil servants, that they would gain respect for and recognition of God’s creation and its nature; and that they would use the authority given them from above in accordance with our Lord’s good design for the world, not the corruption of sin, which they are to rebuke for the good of their citizens, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

That God would spare us from disaster, give suitable rain for the growth of crops, protect those endangered by storms, and give us faith to call on Him in every trouble, trusting that for Christ’s sake, He will work everything for our eternal good, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those in need, that setting their fears aside, they would recognize our Lord’s care for all who are perishing; for peace to calm our troubled consciences; and that God would not reject our prayers for their faithlessness, but teach us to trust fully in Him, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Hear us, heavenly Father, for the sake of Christ Jesus, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

M: O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and bestow on us your

saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: (Sung) Amen.

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

C: (Sung) Amen. Amen. Amen.

HYMN (#439) “Lord, Take My Hand and Lead Me”
