Prayer Before Worship

Speak, Lord, because your servant is listening. I am your servant. Give me understanding that I may know your testimonies. Incline my heart to the words of your mouth. Speak, Lord, for you have the words of eternal life. Speak to me, to comfort my soul and to purify my life. Speak, that you may receive praise, glory and everlasting honor!  Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD

M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and

the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.

In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

C: (Sung) Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.

Your faithfulness continues forever.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Almighty God, you have built your church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. Continue to send your messengers to preserve your people in true peace, that, by the preaching of your word, your church may be kept free from all harm and danger; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:     (Sung) Amen.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON Ezekiel 2:9-3:11

Then I looked, and I saw a hand stretched out toward me, and in it there was a rolled-up scroll. 10 He unrolled it in front of me, and there was writing on both sides. Written on it was: Laments, Groaning, and Woe. Then he said to me, “Son of man, eat what you have received. Eat this scroll, and then go, speak to the house of Israel.” I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll. Then he said to me, “Son of man, feed your stomach and fill your belly with this scroll that I am giving you.” I ate, and in my mouth it was sweet like honey. He then said to me, “Son of man, go now to the house of Israel and speak my words to them. For you are not being sent to a people who have incomprehensible speech or a difficult language, but you are being sent to the house of Israel. Nor are you being sent to many peoples who have incomprehensible speech and difficult languages, whose words you cannot understand. Certainly, if I were to send you to such people, they would listen to you. But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you because they are not willing to listen to me, because the whole house of Israel is hard-headed and hard-hearted. Look, I have made your face just as hard as their faces and your forehead just as hard as their foreheads. I have made your forehead like the hardest stone, harder than flint. Do not fear them, and do not be intimidated by their looks, for they are a rebellious house.” 10 Then he said to me, “Son of man, receive into your heart all my words that I will speak to you, and hear them with your ears. 11 Go now to the exiles, to your own people. You shall speak to them and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says,’ whether they listen or they do not.”          (EHV)

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM OF THE DAY (Sung) Psalm 67

Refrain: Let the people praise you, O God.

Let all the people praise you.

May God be gracious to us and / bless us

And make his face shine up / on us;

May your ways be / known on earth,

Your salvation among all / nations.

May the nations be glad and / sing for joy,

For you rule the peoples justly and guide the nations / of the earth.

Refrain: Let the people praise you, O God.

Let all the people praise you.

Then the land will yield its / harvest,

And God, our God, will / bless us.

God will / bless us,

And all the ends of the earth will / fear him.

Glory be to the Father and / to the Son

And to the Holy / Spirit,

As it was in the be- / ginning,

Is now, and will be forever. / Amen.

Refrain: Let the people praise you, O God.

Let all the people praise you.

SECOND LESSON Galatians 6 :1-10, 14-18

Brothers, if a person is caught in some trespass, you who are spiritual should restore such a person in a spirit of humility, carefully watching yourself so that you are not also tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way fulfill the law of Christ. For if someone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Let each person test his own work, and then he will take pride in regard to himself and not his neighbor. For each man will bear his own burden.

Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with his teacher. Do not be deceived. God is not mocked. To be sure, whatever a man sows, he will also reap. Indeed, the one who sows for his own sinful flesh will reap destruction from the sinful flesh. But the one who sows for the spirit will reap eternal life from the spirit. Let us not become weary of doing good, because at the appointed time we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the household of faith.

14 But far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. 15 In fact, in Christ Jesus circumcision or uncircumcision does not matter. What matters is being a new creation. 16 Peace and mercy on those who follow this rule, namely, on the Israel of God.

17 Finally, let no one cause me any trouble, because I bear the marks of the Lord Jesus on my body. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.                        (EHV)

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

VERSE OF THE DAY

M: Alleluia. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news. Alleluia. (Isaiah 52:7)

C: (Sung) Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

These words are written that we may believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL Luke 10:1-12, 16-20

10 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. So ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest field. Go your way. Look, I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. Do not carry a money bag or traveler’s bag or sandals. Do not greet anyone along the way. Whenever you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ And if a peaceful person is there, your peace will rest on him, but if not, it will return to you. Remain in that same house, eating and drinking what they give you, because the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not keep moving from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they welcome you, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are in the town and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near you.’ 10 “But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust from your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom on that day than for that town.

16 Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”

17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!” 18 He told them, “I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Look, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy. And nothing will ever harm you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names have been written in heaven.”                   (EHV)

M: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: (Sung) Praise be to you, O Christ!

HYMN OF THE DAY (#560) “I Hear the Savior Calling”

1 I hear the Savior calling! The gospel comes to me.

My eyes once closed in blindness Are opened now to see

That I myself was helpless To live eternally,

But, dying, Christ did save me, And now he calls for me!

2. I hear the Savior calling! He leads a soul to me,

A soul in bitter anguish, One needing to be free.

The gift I have to offer Is Christ, my Lord’s decree

That all have been forgiven— My Savior calls for me!

3. I hear the Savior calling!  He gives this charge to me:

To serve the best I’m able, What-e’er the call may be.

Thus hand in hand with others Who share the gospel key

We spread the gospel tidings— My Savior calls for me!

4. I hear the Savior calling! He changes hearts for me.

From door to door I witness To share my Savior’s plea;

Yet nothing can be added, No word on bended knee,

Beyond the simple gospel— My Savior calls for me!

5. I hear the Savior calling! His call has urgency!

Each moment souls are dying; Soon comes eternity.

And so, my precious Savior, This is my humble plea:

Prepare me for my mission For you are calling me!

SERMON TEXT Luke 10:1-12, 16-20

SERMON THEME “Sent to Proclaim Peace”

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

THANKSGIVING

OFFERING – Please leave offering in the plate as you depart.

HYMN (#559) “Lord of the Living Harvest”

1 Lord of the living harvest That ripens o’er the plain,
Where angels soon will gather Their sheaves of golden grain,
Accept our hands to labor, Our hearts to trust and love,
And be with us to hasten Your kingdom from above.

2 As lab’rers in your vineyard, Lord, give us work to do,
Content to bear the burden Of weary days for you,
To ask no other wages When you will call us home
Than to have shared the labor That makes your kingdom come.

3 Be with us, God the Father; Be with us, God the Son
And God the Holy Spirit, Most blessed Three in One.
Make us your faithful servants You rightly to adore,
And fill us with your blessing Both now and evermore.
