Prayer upon Entering Church

Lord, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells. In the multitude of your tender mercies prepare my heart that I may enter your house to worship and confess your holy name; through Jesus Christ, my God and Lord. Amen.

Order of Service

HYMN (#576) “Spread, Oh, Spread the Mighty Word”

STAND

INVOCATION

M:     In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:     Amen.

LITANY: The Opening Litany (Isaiah 60:1-6)

M: Arise, shine for your light has come,

and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

C: See, darkness covers the earth

and thick darkness is over the peoples,

M: But the Lord rises upon you

and his glory appears over you.

C: Nations will come to your light

and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

M: Lift up your eyes and look about you:

C: Your sons come from afar

and your daughters are carried on the arm.

M: Herds of camels will cover your land,

young camels of Midian and Ephah.

C: And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense

and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION  (Psalm 51:1-4, 1 Peter 2:9-10)

M: Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sins.

C: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;

according to your great compassion

blot out my transgressions.

Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,

and my sin is always before me.

Against you, you only, have I sinned

and done what is evil in your sight.

M: You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a

people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of

him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of

God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have

received mercy. Amen.

HYMN (#242) “Oh, that I Had a Thousand Voices”

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray: Almighty God, you have committed to your Church

the task of making disciples of all nations. Enlighten with your

wisdom those who teach and those who learn, that, rejoicing in

the knowledge of your truth, they may worship and serve you

from generation to generation; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

C:     Amen.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON Ecclesiastes 5:10-20

10 Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. 11 As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them?

12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much,
but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep. 13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners, 14 or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when they have children there is nothing left for them to inherit. 15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands. 16 This too is a grievous evil: As everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind? 17 All their days they eat in darkness, with great frustration, affliction and anger.

18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.            (NIV)

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 96 (page 102)

SECOND LESSON Hebrews 13:1-6

13 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”             (NIV)

M: The Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

STAND

GOSPEL Luke 16:19-31

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ 27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”             (NIV)

M: The Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ.

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN (#777 S) “Now Let Us All in Hymns of Praise”

THANKSGIVING

OFFERING – Please leave offering in the plate as you depart.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

M: Dear Father in heaven, with your gift of a Savior you restored

hope for our fallen world and brought glory to your name. We

thank you for the good news that you have reconciled the world

to yourself through your Son.

C: Be with us as you give us opportunities to proclaim your

glorious name of salvation in Jesus Christ our Savior.

M: O Jesus, Lamb of God, we praise you for offering yourself as the

atoning sacrifice for the sins of all. On the cross you declared the

sacrifice for sins completed. At the open tomb, you assured the

world that sinners are reconciled to God.

C: Be with us as you have promised, so that we may be bold and

confident witnesses to our family members and friends.

M: Holy Spirit, blessed Counselor, use your Word of Truth and

power to break down the barriers to our witness, including fallen

mankind’s natural hatred for God and Satan’s wicked work

among us.

C: Empower us by your gospel, and encourage us to be faithful,

fervent witnesses to the people among whom we live and

work.

M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

Silent Prayer

M: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, send us by the power of your Word

into the mission fields beyond the walls of our church. Give us

hearing ears and seeing eyes that seize the opportunities you set

before us to be your witnesses.

C:     Guide us, strengthen us, and bless us as we declare Christ to

our world. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power

and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER

M:    Almighty God, grant to your Church the Holy Spirit and the

wisdom that comes down from above. Let nothing hinder your

Word from being freely proclaimed to the joy and edifying of

Christ’s holy people, so that we may serve you in steadfast

faith and confess your name as long as we live,

through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:      Amen.

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one

another. Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

C: Amen.
