Prayer before Communion

Most gracious Lord, you bid me to approach your altar in confidence and hope. O sweet and friendly word in a sinner’s ear, that you, Lord God, invite the needy and the poor to the communion of your body and blood! You, the Lord of the Universe, have willed to come to me, a poor and lowly sinner, to live in me. Grant me grace at all times and in all places to give you hearty thanks for this marvelous gift. Amen

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and

actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good.

For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity.

But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior

Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

LORD, HAVE MERCY

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 56:1, 6-8

56 This is what the Lord says. Protect justice, and carry out righteousness, because my salvation is coming very soon. My righteousness is ready to be revealed.

⁶ Then the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to him and to love the name of the Lord and to become his servants, every one of them who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, those who take hold of my covenant— ⁷ I will bring them to my holy mountain, and I will make them glad in my house of prayer. Their whole burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar. SECOND LESSON Ephesians 2:13-22

¹³ But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. ¹⁴ For he himself is our peace. He made the two groups one by destroying the wall of hostility that divided them ¹⁵ when he abolished the law of commandments and regulations in his flesh. He did this to create in himself one new person out of the two, in this way making peace. ¹⁶ And he did this to reconcile both to God in one body through the cross by putting the hostility to death on it. ¹⁷ He also came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. ¹⁸ For through him we both 

have access to the Father by one Spirit. ¹⁹ So then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household. ²⁰ You have been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the Cornerstone. ²¹ In him the whole building is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord. ²² In him you too are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.            (EHV)

GOSPEL Matthew 15:21-28

After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

²¹ Jesus left that place and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon. ²² There a Canaanite woman from that territory came and kept crying out, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! A demon is severely tormenting my daughter!” ²³ But he did not answer her a word.

His disciples came and pleaded, “Send her away, because she keeps crying out after us.” ²⁴ He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 

²⁵ But she came and knelt in front of him, saying, “Lord, help me.” ²⁶ He answered her, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to their little dogs.” 

²⁷ “Yes, Lord,” she said, “yet their little dogs also eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” ²⁸ Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, your faith is great! It will be done for you, just as you desire.” And her daughter was healed at that very hour.             (EHV)

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, 

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the house of the Lord, that it may be a house of prayer and we a people of prayer, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the Church, that she may steadfastly proclaim the irrevocable gifts and calling of God, that the disobedient may receive mercy, and that those who hear may become branches grafted onto the true vine, Jesus Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all honest work and occupations and our good use of the fruits of our labors; for generosity toward those in need; and for the tithes and offerings that accompany our sacrifice of praise, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the government and those who protect us, that they may keep justice and do righteousness, carrying out their duties in accord with God’s will, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the sick and afflicted, those beset with grief and sorrow, pain and any trouble, that the Lord would be pleased to answer their cries for the sake of Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

OUR FATHER’S BUSINESS

SUMMER PICNIC THANK YOU:  Thank you again to all who participated in the Summer Picnic. After expenses, $1,694 will go to the general fund for the parking lot.

SUNDAY SCHOOL will begin on Sept. 20. If you would like to teach or serve as a substitute teacher, please contact Pastor Oehlke or Julie Gutknecht.

MEN OF HIS WORD CONFERENCE: Registration is open for the 2026 Men of His Word Conference, “Courage Under Fire,” on Oct. 24 at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester. Men of His Word exists to equip Christian men to take a leadership role within their family, congregation and community, while providing opportunities and resources for men to grow spiritually. See the west bulletin board for details.

MEDITATIONS: New Meditations, entitled “Great Gain!,” have arrived with daily devotions for Aug. 30-Nov. 28. There are large print editions also available. Feel free to take additional copies of either version to share. A free will offering would be gratefully accepted to help defray the costs.
