“Set Apart”
Service Theme:
The West Lutheran High School Association theme for 2026/27, Set Apart, reminds us who we are in Christ. In a world where it’s easy to blend in, God has graciously set us apart as his own people and given us a unique purpose. In 1 Peter 2:9, we’re reminded that we aren’t just saved from something (called out of darkness), but also saved for something (to declare his praises). Our prayer is that every student grows in the confidence of being God’s treasured possession and shines the light of Christ in the world around them.
WEST Sunday
Oct0ber 11, 2026
Opening Hymn “Church of God, Elect and Glorious” #774S
Invocation
M. In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C. Amen.
Confession
M. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not
in us.
C. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.
M. Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
C. Holy God, gracious Father,
I am sinful by nature
and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and
actions.
I have not loved you with my whole heart;
I have not loved others as I should.
I deserve your punishment both now and forever.
But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins
with his innocent suffering and death.
Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Silence for meditation and reflection
M. Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C. Amen.
Hymn of Praise # 234 vs. 1, 3, 5
The Word
Prayer of the Day
M. Let us pray.
M. Almighty God, by your Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified. Receive our prayers for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocations and ministries they may truly serve and honor you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C. Amen.
First Reading Exodus 19:1–8a
1On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai. 2After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.
3Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
7So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak. 8The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.”
M. The Word of the Lord.
C. Thanks be to God.
“Through All the Changing Scenes of Life” Psalm 34A
Second Reading 1 Peter 2:9–12
9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
M. The Word of the Lord.
C. Thanks be to God.

Gospel John 17:11b–19
Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
13“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
M. The Gospel of the Lord.
C. Praise be to you, O Christ!

Sermon – Set Apart (1 Peter 2: 9-12)
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Offering
Prayer of the Church
M. Dear Lord, as we pray for young adults, we humbly ask that you would be their God, their guide, and their faithful friend. Help them find direction and fulfillment in their vocations and contentment in the blessings you have given. Assure them of your gracious rule in their lives as they establish careers and families.
C. Let us, as the body of believers, support them in their various endeavors and encourage them to use their unique gifts to serve your church.
M. For all in our congregations who work hard each day to gain their daily bread and then work hard again to support and participate in the gospel ministry,
C. that they may be spared fatigue and frustration as they use their leisure time for the sake of your Son;
M. For those who bring food from the earth, who tend flocks and herds, who cultivate the ground, who find food in the sea, and who bake our daily bread,
C. that they may know you, as we do, to be the giver of every good and perfect gift;
M. For those who help us in times of trouble, for lawyers, doctors, emergency workers, counselors, funeral directors, and all whose life interests focus on difficult times,
C. that they may see themselves as those who extend your divine hand to the hurting;
M. For all who support us day by day, often without our notice, janitors and maids, cooks and servers, secretaries and technicians, and so many more,
C. that they may enjoy the grateful thanks we children of God owe them;
M. For people who live in great poverty or endure war and political unrest or experience oppression and tyranny,
C. that their quest for security might lead them to search where you may be found.
M. Lead us to see in the lives of all people the working of your eternal plan. Preserve us from an arrogance that elevates our service and sacrifice above that of others.
C. Lead us to appreciate the gifts you give to all people and to give you thanks with our acceptance and humility.
M. Eternal Father, give us a sense of purpose as we live our lives in the roles you have designed for each of us. Help us to see your divine plan in our calling and make us content as we carry out our tasks.
C. Give us joy to know that we live for you and for others as the servants of Christ Jesus in whose name we pray. Amen.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing
The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look on you with favor and + give you peace.
Amen.
